Star Entertainment Licence Ban Ruling Deferred

The Star Entertainment Group has received a significant reprieve regarding its Gold Coast casino operations, as the Queensland government has postponed the suspension of its licence for an additional year. This decision follows a previous six-month extension granted for The Star Sydney’s licence suspension.

The Gold Coast casino’s licence was initially set to be suspended for a period of 90 days starting from September 30, 2026. However, the Queensland government, led by the Crisafulli administration, has decided to defer this suspension until September 30, 2027. This extension is contingent upon the progress made by The Star in implementing necessary remediation measures, as outlined in a report by special manager Nicholas Weeks.

Nicholas Weeks has been appointed as the special manager overseeing The Star’s compliance with regulatory requirements. His recent report indicated that while some progress has been made, the pace of remediation has been slower than expected. This delay has been attributed to the financial difficulties faced by The Star, which have created uncertainty regarding its operational future.

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Integrity, Jarrod Bleijie, emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity within Queensland’s casino operations. He stated that the government would continue to monitor The Star’s remediation efforts closely, ensuring that key milestones are met. This vigilance reflects the government’s determination to uphold the integrity of the gaming industry in the state.

Potential Consequences of Non-Compliance

Despite the deferral, Bleijie made it clear that the government retains the authority to take immediate action should The Star fail to fulfil its remediation obligations. This statement underscores the seriousness of the situation and the potential repercussions for the casino operator if it does not meet the required standards.

A comprehensive review conducted in 2022 revealed troubling findings regarding The Star’s operations. The review concluded that the casino had “actively encouraged persons excluded by police in NSW and Victoria to gamble at its Queensland casinos.” This practice raised significant concerns about the casino’s corporate culture and its marketing strategies, which appeared to prioritise attracting business over responsible gambling practices.

The review’s findings placed the Star Gold Coast casino at risk of infiltration by individuals suspected of engaging in criminal activities. This alarming revelation has prompted the government to take a more proactive stance in regulating the casino’s operations, ensuring that such incidents do not recur.

In light of these developments, The Star Entertainment Group has acknowledged the need for further work to address the issues identified in the review. CEO Steve McCann stated that the group remains committed to its remediation plan, which aims to support safe and compliant operations moving forward.

McCann also highlighted the importance of maintaining a transparent and constructive relationship with the special manager, the NSW Independent Casino Commission, and the NSW government. This commitment is crucial for demonstrating The Star’s suitability as a licence holder and restoring confidence among stakeholders.
