Thailand Names Four Tourist Provinces for Casino Resorts

Thailand’s government has announced the selection of four provinces as potential sites for expansive casino-entertainment complexes.
The announcement comes on the heels of the Thai Cabinet’s approval of a draft law in January that would legalize gambling and casinos in specific areas. This move represents a departure from Thailand’s longstanding prohibition on most forms of gambling, with only state-run horse races and an official lottery currently permitted.
The four chosen provinces – Bangkok, Chonburi, Chiang Mai, and Phuket – are already popular destinations among both domestic and international tourists.
Bangkok: The Capital’s Allure
Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital, is an obvious choice for one of the casino-entertainment complexes. As the country’s primary gateway for international visitors, Bangkok offers:
- Extensive transportation infrastructure, including two international airports
- A diverse range of accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly options
- Rich cultural attractions, including temples, palaces, and museums
- A vibrant nightlife and entertainment scene
- World-class shopping and dining experiences
Chonburi: Coastal Charm and Accessibility
Chonburi province, home to the popular beach resort city of Pattaya, presents an attractive option for a casino-entertainment complex due to its:
- Proximity to Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi International Airport
- Established tourism infrastructure along the Eastern Seaboard
- Beautiful beaches and islands
- Variety of water sports and outdoor activities
- Existing entertainment venues and attractions
Chiang Mai: Northern Cultural Hub
As the largest city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers a unique blend of culture, nature, and modern amenities:
- Rich Lanna cultural heritage and numerous temples
- Cooler climate and mountainous landscapes
- Thriving arts and crafts scene
- Growing digital nomad and expat community
- Gateway to other northern attractions
Phuket: Tropical Island Paradise
Phuket, Thailand’s largest island and a world-renowned beach destination, rounds out the list of chosen provinces:
- International airport with direct flights from many countries
- Stunning beaches and clear waters
- Luxury resorts and villas
- Water sports and marine activities
- Vibrant nightlife and entertainment options
However Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, said earlier this week that there is no rush to develop the casino resorts and the government needed more time to evaluate their impact on society.
