Sri Lanka borrowed the money to develop the location from the Chinese authorities but due to huge amounts owed to China by Sri Lanka the Sri-Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa handed over the destination to Chinese control back in 2017 for 99 years.
Now with the port under Chinese control it has been reported that regulations will be drawn up to allow for the development of casinos in the port, this even thou former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he wanted to stop casinos in the country.
But with Sri Lanka in large debt to the Chinese government it looks certain that at least one casino resort or more will be built. License applications are not expected till 2022 and who would be eligible is not clear.
