Ed Miliband standing against new gambling proposals

It seems that the Daily Mail Newspaper did not take long to rally their troops against the recent announcement from the parliamentary report on gambling from MPs regarding revising the gaming laws in favour of the industry.

Some of the points the report highlighted for change were:

  • Recommending that the location of casinos and slot machines should be more relaxed.
  • Local councils should be allowed to permit betting shops to operate more than four high-stake gambling machines, which can accept stakes of up to £100 and offer prizes of £500.
  • Casinos should be allowed up to 20 of the machines and that local councils should decide on casino licenses.

However the mail newspaper has brought out none other than Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party to voice his concerns on the report, this new stance on gambling by the Labour party is not going to help the industry push forward with the report recommendations.

Some of Mr Milibands comments were;

‘I’m a casinos sceptic. I’m sceptical about lots more casinos. I was sceptical about supercasinos originally, he continued with saying. ‘Of course there are casinos – and nobody is talking about getting rid of those – but I always thought there must be other routes to economic development and economic growth than through loads more casinos.’

It seems the Mail is going hard again against the gambling industry, which is no surprise, they always do, however this puts a big questions mark over many of the proposals signalled in the report.
