Wynn Resorts Set To Expand Into UAE As Gulf State Considers Gambling

Las Vegas-based operator Wynn Resorts has signed a ground-breaking deal to construct a colossal luxury complex in the United Arab Emirates. The site is destined to for the Ras Al Khaimah emirate, and potentially will facilitate an unprecedented step in the Gulf state’s cultural history.

Given its Muslim identity, the middle-eastern territory has previously held conservative views on gambling, and outlawed its presence in any format. However, Wynn’s latest venture could be set to overturn years of restrictive practice, as the planned new resort will harbour a specific ‘gaming area’

Importantly, there’s no formal announcement as to whether this space will facilitate gambling, however, there are subtle indications that the UAE could embrace the industry for the very first time.  Local tourism organization, RAKTDA, have established a new gaming regulatory body to oversee the incorporation of this, and potentially other ‘integrated resorts’ A sure-fire sign that activity could well be on the cards.

Furthermore, in recent years, the Sheikhdom has moved to liberalize some of its traditional policies in order to protect its status as a regional leader in tourism and industry. Sex before marriage is now permitted, and alcohol consumption no longer remains illegal. Gambling may well be the next cultural obstacle to be successfully navigated.

The region has attracted considerable interest over the past few years, as operators pre-emptively jockey for position in what could be an incredibly lucrative market. Back in 2018, Caesar’s Entertainment embarked upon their first non-gambling endeavour, through the construction of their Bluewater Island resort in Dubai. MGM has also joined its compatriots by building three resorts on man-made ‘The Island,’ also located in the Dubai emirate.

Gambling in the UAE may not be inevitable, but the winds of change seem to be blowing stronger than ever, and Wynn Resorts may be the first to capitalize.
