High Court London
Betfred has lost its three year battle against a gambler and will now payout the £1.7 million that was originally won by the customer.
A High Court judge ruled that the terms and conditions laid out by the gambling firm did not match the error that was claimed by Betfred in saying there was a programming error in the Magic Seven game Andrew Green was playing.
At the time Betfred informed the gambler that they would not payout the company said: “Betfred loves to pay out all our jackpot winners – both big and small.
“Unfortunately, and as Mr Green is aware, a new game release suffered a software malfunction in January this year and no legitimate jackpot win occurred.”
It was in January 2018 that Andrew Green won the jackpot on the game and after three year the High Court Judge Mrs Justice Foster said on her ruling in favour of Mr Green: ‘I am of the clear view that these clauses in the terms and conditions are inadequate to exempt Betfred from the obligation to pay out on an ostensibly winning bet or series of bets.’
Mr Green said after the ruling: “This to me today isn’t just a win for me, it’s a win for everybody that they can’t treat people like this.
“People who use these platforms hopefully will realise with my story there is justice out there and don’t be bullied by these people and in the end, justice will be theirs.”
Following the ruling Betfred said they would not appeal the High Court decision and apologised for the delay in paying Mr Green his winnings.
