Boyd Gaming’s Q3 Net Income Declines Sharply

Boyd Gaming Corporation reported a steep year-over-year drop in third-quarter net income, though the decline reflects an accounting comparison rather than deteriorating operating performance. Net income attributable to the company for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, fell 91.3% to $124.9 million, or $1.71 per share, from $1.4 billion, or $17.81 per share, in the prior-year period. The earlier figure was inflated by a $1.4 billion after-tax gain from the sale of Boyd’s equity stake in FanDuel, completed in 2025.

Underlying Results Show Relative Stability

Total revenue for the third quarter came in at $990.5 million, down 1.4% from the prior year and modestly below analyst estimates of approximately $1 billion. Adjusted EBITDAR declined 0.7% to $319.6 million. On an adjusted basis, earnings were $121.7 million, or $1.67 per share, compared with $139.1 million, or $1.72 per share, in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted earnings per share exceeded consensus expectations by roughly $0.05.

Segment performance was mixed. The Las Vegas Locals segment saw revenue decline 1.6%, while the company attributed softer results in Southern Nevada to reduced destination travel to the market. Downtown Las Vegas revenue also contracted, reflecting continued softness in the visitor economy.

The Midwest and South segment provided the primary offset, with revenue increasing nearly 3% on an adjusted basis. Gaming revenues in that segment rose more than 2%, and the company noted continued strength in its core customer base.

Online Segment Rebounds

The Online segment, which was reset following the FanDuel transaction, showed signs of recovery. Online segment profit grew approximately 16% year over year, marking its first annual increase since Boyd sold its FanDuel interest. Under revised market-access agreements with FanDuel announced at the time of the sale, Boyd guided its Online segment to generate between $35 million and $40 million in EBITDAR for 2026, a figure the company raised during the second quarter. Boyd also lifted full-year guidance for its Managed business to $113 million to $117 million in adjusted EBITDAR.

Boyd returned nearly $180 million to shareholders during the quarter through share repurchases and dividends, including a quarterly cash dividend of $0.20 per share. On a comparable basis, the company reported property operating margins of approximately 40%, with management characterizing quarter results as reflecting both revenue and Adjusted EBITDAR growth when excluding segment resets.

The headline decline in net income warrants context rather than alarm. The prior-year quarter was among the most profitable in the company’s history solely because of the one-time FanDuel gain, which converted a long-held strategic stake into $1.755 billion in cash proceeds. Measured against normalized earnings, the third quarter of 2026 demonstrates a business holding near its prior levels despite persistent headwinds in the Las Vegas visitor market.
