The last part of the Riviera Hotel and Casino the Monte Carlo tower has be demolished in Las Vegas this morning, bringing to an end a history that will almost certainly never be repeated.
During its 60 year history that ended in 2015 the Strip’s first ever high rise building has hosted headline acts such as Liberace to Dean Martin. Now the land is being used to extend the Las Vegas Convention Center after owners Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority bought the property of 26 acres for $182.5 million last year. It is spending $42 million just to clear the site and prepare it for opening in January of 2017.
In its time the 2,075 hotel room venue was known as the “mobs joint” called The Riv however was used in several movies including including the Rat Pack’s original 1960 “Ocean’s 11,” the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever” and 1995’s “Casino.”
According to press releases it had its final job as a film venue with the latest release of the new “Jason Bourne” film.
Sadly the final part of the historic casino resort was removed in the early hours of the night and no-one was there to see it go.
