Calls For A Mandatory Levy On Gambling Companies

The call for a mandatory levy on gambling companies to support treatment for gambling addiction grows further and with the government review on gambling taking place many insiders believe, this could be the year that sees gambling companies have to pay a mandatory fee to support problem gambling.

It has always been a fact that several large operators pay the major amount of money to support GambleAware and other gambling related charities under a voluntary arrangement and many others do not pay any at all.

But the industry has been opposed to governments setting a mandatory fee to support charities and health organisations in supporting gambling related harm.

In a recent interview Claire Murdoch, the national mental health director for NHS England said: The NHS is being left to pick up the pieces as the number of people seeking help to stop gambling has soared.

Murdoch is one of the growing list of health care workers and politicians along with the UK Gambling Commission that now believe it is time for the gambling industry to have a mandatory levy imposed.

One gambling consultant told the iGaming Post: “the levy would have to be fair for small and large operators alike and would need to be linked with gross gaming revenues and not a set fee for all.”
