Alvin Chau
Alvin Chau the former founder and chairman of Junket firm Suncity is to appear in a Macau court charged with over 200 crimes, they include illegal gambling activities, running a criminal syndicate, money laundering and fraud.
Before the pandemic hit the world Alvin Chau was one of the most recognised and celebrated personalities in Macau who ran the biggest junket operation, however that all changed in November 2021 when the Chinese city of Wenzhou issued a warrant for his arrest under similar charges.
Chau has already pleaded guilty to those accounts but now faces even more charges in Macau. At the height of his companies prominence Suncity was said to account for 25% of all the total gaming revenues in Macau with his junkets, which in 2019 revenues in Macau stood at $36 billion.
But now according to local reports Chau is charged with operating illegal online gambling with total bets exceeding a mind boggling $105 billion, along with hiding revenues from casino operators which affected the bottom line of operators profits and ultimately government taxes.
It is suggested that Alvin Chau teamed up with Macau’s second largest junket operator run by Tak Chun’s Levo Chan to run the operation, both are held in custody since their arrests and due to appear in Macau court today.
