Liz Truss favourite to be new Prime Minister next week
This time next week the UK will have a new Prime Minister, it will either be current foreign secretary Liz Truss or former chancellor Rishi Sunak. According to the bookmakers it looks like Liz Truss will be asked to form a new government come 5 September.
But if anyone thinks that the publication of the White paper on UK gambling reforms will be seen anytime soon are fooling themselves.
The country is bracing itself for a very harsh Autumn and Winter with soaring energy bills, rising cost of living and inflation, all these could point to job losses.
With all this in mind the new Prime Minister and government will have little time for a paper that could impose more restrictions on the gambling industry and could create even more job losses.
It was back in December 2020 when new reforms were looked at, since then COVID and government upheavals have seen the publication of these reforms delayed time and again. This is certain to continue when however, comes to own the keys to Number 10 Downing Street next week.
Should it turn out to be Liz Truss the gambling industry could hope for a more lenient reform policy when it happens, in recent hustings around the country the foreign secretary represents herself as a supporter of lower taxes, pro-business, anti-woke and anti-Nanny State libertarian.
The UK gambling industry truly want to see reforms in the country, uncertainty is not good for business, but neither are strong over the top restrictions. It is certain that no White Paper on gambling will see the light of day this year, the government have bigger issues but when it comes a more considered and pragmatic approach to gambling in the UK is hoped for.
