DCMS Launches Inquiry Into National Lottery Bids

The Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced it will launch an inquiry to examine the handling of the current tender process for the National Lottery.

Bids so far in competition to current holder Camelot UK are from Allwyn, Northern & Shell Group and Sisal with previous interested party Sugal & Damani announcing their withdrawal are due to be considered with the winner being announced in late September this year.

However the DCMS wants to ensure that the multi-billion competition for a 10-year license “maximises the opportunities for players and good causes to benefit from innovation and creativity, whilst protecting the National Lottery’s unique status.” It said in a statement.

The department that oversees the lottery fears that “returns for good causes had not increased at the same rate as the profits of the current operator, Camelot’.

As a result of these concerns, the DCMS confirmed that ‘changes will be made to the operation of the licence to require that contributions to these causes will rise in a similar proportion to profits”.

To this the DCMS are asking stakeholders for input on how the bidding competition was run, how returns for good causes are calculated and how the impact of the licensed winning bidder will impact on gambling in a wider sense.

Bidders are still open to enter the race for the license till the 10th September, observers believe that Camelot are still favourites to win the license to run the lottery for another 10 years.
