Macau hit a record peak since the pandemic began in 2020 with gross gaming revenues for January hitting MOP11.58 billion ($1.44 billion), which represents a rise of 82.5% from the same month last year.
The numbers are helped by the Chinese New Year (CNY) that fell in the month and saw increased visitor numbers since 2020 also, helped also by the Chinese government relaxing restrictions on travel in and out of the country.
Although VIP numbers are drastically reduced mass market gambling pushed up the figures with hotel rooms sold out for the CNY and visitor numbers peaking at 90,000 per day.
The January boom in revenues will boost confidence that 2023 will see a return to some normality in terms of visitors and revenues after what has been more than 2 years of COVID restrictions.
