Missouri State Senate
Missouri’s pro sports teams aim want sports betting legalised in the state, led by the St. Louis Cardinals, this collaborative effort seeks to enhance the fan experience and generate revenue say the teams.
Multiple sports betting petitions have been submitted to the Secretary of State’s office, with a goal of collecting about 180,000 signatures by May. The teams have pledged to cover signature collection costs and launch an ad campaign. Major players in the sports betting industry, including BetMGM, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics Sportsbook, are also involved.
If approved, the constitutional amendment would allow pro sports teams and casinos in Missouri to offer onsite and online sports betting. This aligns with neighboring states, where sports betting is already legal in all but one. Maine and Vermont are still establishing their betting systems.
Legalizing sports betting in Missouri could bring excitement to fans and generate about $30 million in annual revenue. Up to four online sports betting companies could gain state approval, fostering competition and creating more revenue streams.
Missouri plans to impose a 10% tax on adjusted gross sports betting revenue, applied after winnings and promotional bets are paid out. A compulsive gamblers prevention fund would receive $5 million to address addiction concerns.
The remaining funds would support K-12 schools and higher education institutions, benefiting Missouri’s educational system and local communities.
Rather than waiting for state legislature action, Missouri’s pro sports teams are leading the charge for change. Their commitment to enhancing the fan experience and solidifying Missouri’s sports reputation is evident.
If the sports betting petition succeeds, it could be added to the 2024 ballot for voters to decide. This allows for extensive public discourse on the pros and cons of legalizing sports betting, with the ultimate decision in the hands of Missouri citizens.
Kentucky recently legalized sports betting, becoming the 35th state to do so. This trend puts pressure on Missouri to follow suit.
